Is it compulsory that we need to calibrate the device every time, we use the new cables or for new set of frequency? I don't have a calibrating device like impedance test set or cal kit. The 4395A is a very versatile instrument with three functions. Depending on what you want to do with it, different forms of calibration will be required. It's three functions are: * Spectrum analyzer * Vector network analyzer * Impedance analyzer - only if you have software option 010. So the obvious question is what do you want to do with it? What is the application? When you switch it on, it should report its option(s), such as * 001 - internal bias * 010 - impedance measurement * 1D5 - high stability timebase * 1D6 - time-gated spectrum analysis. and its firmware version. What does it report? Also check on the back. The options should be printed on there. Sometimes it seems option 1D5 is printed on the back, but the instrument does not display this when powered on. I have never quite worked out why that is, but it seems to be quite a common. Those options will to some extent determine what you can do with it. What accessories do you have? Typical accessories to have with that instrument would include * 43961A RF Impedance Test - only needed for impedance measurements if software option 010 is fitted. * 87511A S-Parameter Test, with adapters typically from APC7 to N connectors. * A vector network analyzer calibration kit such as the 85032B * 16191A Side Electrode SMD Test Fixture * 16192A Parallel Electrode SMD Test Fixture * 16193A Small side electrode SMD test fixture Unfortunately, for impedance measurements, not only do you need software option 010, but you also need some quite expensive accessories. The 43961A is pretty damm expensive even on the used market. Once people know what you want to do with it, then they could advise you about calibration of the instrument. Please note, I do not work for Keysight, and have never seen a 4395A. But I have thought of purchasing one before, so having read some of the documentation. I have a reasonable idea about the instrument, but I am no expert. The 4395A is officially supported, so you could ask for support via official Keysight support channels, since you might find it a bit more of a struggle on these forums if you want to use the impedance test set, as that instrument is developed in Japan, but it is extremely rare for any of the Japanese staff to post to these forums.
