A major 21st century problem is the fact that over 1.3 billion people worldwide lack regular access to electricity however it’s a remote Scottish island which could have the solution to this global conundrum.
The Scottish island of Eigg, which lies 15 miles off the west coast in 2008 became the world’s first community to launch an off-grid electric system powered by wind, water and solar. Prior to this the residents of this small island depended on noisy, expensive diesel generators. However the electrification scheme made 24-hour power available to residents and demonstrated not only how to deliver electricity from renewable energy, but how societies could meet their energy needs without access to a national grid.
This passionate embracing of renewable energies has set an example for communities across the globe, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia and proved how this can support modern-day living and improve quality of life.
Photovoltaic power generation is forecasted to have a significant impact in the global power equation and has been demonstrated to be economically viable and technologically feasible. Recent advances in photovoltaic cell technology, coupled with the recent availability of high efficiency, high performance, and low cost semiconductor devices, will facilitate the implementation of renewable energy systems which are efficient, affordable, and reliable.
ON Semiconductor’s continuing innovation in process technology, system topologies, and component performance will satisfy the demands of future renewable energy systems and lead the way with its broad product portfolio.
