The problem is that I am getting negative noise figure values for virtually the whole band! The gain though and the output power seems okay though. You should first move to the latest firmware. With Option 028 must be used very carefully above 27 GHz. The reciever uses the third harmonic of the LO and so that means that it has higher internal noise figure and is sensitive to any noise power from the DUT or during calibration that occurse at 1/3 the input frequency (about 16.5 GHz in your case). Normally, you must pre-filter the receveiver in your band. Further, for option 028, there is a kind-of factory calibration that is not on the older units. If the file is missing, it creates it the first time a NF cal is performed. BUT, the software expects a normal setup (like a preset setup) and if you are not in such a preset condition, sometimes the calibration gets poor results. This is especially true if you have a lot of loss between port 1 and port 2 during calibration. I'm not sure of the file name, I'll check on Tuesday, but you rename this cal file, preset and do a NF cal and it will recreate this file. For your case, you should just use standard conf with normal test port cables. This cal is quite slow, and measures the Noise Receiver Gain-BW product. We think this value is quite stable so this cal isn't need for every NF cal, but if there was a poor configuration (highly lossy, band limited, for example) when it first occured, then it can cause some problems. The other issue, which is almost more likely, is that you cannot get an accurate power meter calibraiton at the low power levels you are using. So instead of a normal calibration, use "Cal All". This allows you to do the calibration at a high power, and then automatically charaterize the attenutor difference from the high power, and calibrate the lower power level using the PNA receiver. YOu might even try this first. |

For the 'Cal All' on noise figure, you're saying I can just set the power level (i.e. -30dBm) without regard to the attenuator settings and later apply that cal and change the source attenuation later on. No, not exactly, you set the (or multiple channels) with your desired setting, when you start cal-all, you have the opportunity to set different attenuation for cal, and the difference in the performance between attenuator settings in the Cal-all channel and measurement channels are characterized and applied to the calsets for each channel. I did try it out with the 'Cal All' using calibration settings of 0 dB source attenuation and -15dBm calibration power, and now I'm getting positive noise figure measurements, although the results do have some noticeable ripple, since it is estimating the changes to a source attenuation of 40dB for the measurement channel.
